What we do

HIV surveillance and programme monitoring systems serve as the cornerstone of our understanding of the HIV epidemic, with its dynamics and diversity across geographic regions, segments of the population, and time. These systems must constantly be adapted to provide more information with fewer resources.

The Working Group’s main responsibilities are to:

  • serve as the lead coordinating body in the development of best practices for using surveillance and programmatic data to monitor the HIV epidemic,
  • advance and improve the quality and availability of HIV surveillance and programmatic data to inform
and decision making at the global, regional and national level, and
  • raise awareness important methodological and ethical issues
around conducting HIV surveillance and programme monitoring
  • develop or disseminate training materials on topics related to HIV strategic information

This work is accomplished primarily through convening expert consultations and meetings and coordinating and publishing guidance, reports on special topics, and training materials.
